SERGUEI RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30

Conducted by Susanna Mälkki, the London Symphony Orchestra's second major concert crosses portraits of composer George Benjamin and pianist Kirill Gerstein, with virtuosity as the common denominator – as in Rachmaninoff’s highly popular Third Concerto. The evening opens with Benjamin's ‘playful and volatile’ Concerto for Orchestra and continues with Hindemith's Symphony Mathis der Maler – an homage to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece.

As a tribute to Kaija Saariaho, who passed away on 2 June, this concert, conducted by Susanna Mälkki on Thursday 20 July 2023 at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, will open with her piece Lumière et Pesanteur based on the “Eighth Station” of La Passion de Simone, of which she was particularly fond.
