Long renowned for its support of string quartets and piano trios that have already been formed, the Académie is now offering a new chamber music programme for its 25th anniversary, aimed at solo instrumentalists who would like to perfect their experience of a repertoire in ensembles of varying sizes. Thirteen instrumentalists, selected from 263 applicants, will perform a repertoire ranging from Brahms to Betsy Jolas — the composer in the spotlight at this 75th edition of the Festival — and from Beethoven to Mahler, in a series of concerts that will culminate on 5 July in an evening under the stars at the Hôtel Maynier d'Oppède, where the residents will be sharing the stage with prestigious artists.

Designed in conjunction with the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein, this residency presents an opportunity to firmly embed his image in the 2023 edition of the Festival d'Aix. He is not only a tremendous soloist, concert performer and chamber musician, but is also a great teacher who passionately shares his knowledge of the art of the repertoire with small ensembles. He will be joined by two musicians with whom he has collaborated for many years, Stefan Dohr and Noah Bendix-Balgley —respectively principal horn and principal violin of the Berliner Philharmoniker — and by the young soprano Joanna Wallroth.

Through the different repertoires and daily master classes, this residency is intended above all to be a place to meet and to share, without any notion of competition. It is to be a refuge that offers the musicians time, and provides them with the opportunity to question the very profession of the musician today, by examining artistic issues — such as the diversity of repertoires, multidisciplinary collaboration, the breaking down of aesthetic barriers, and outreach initiatives — and current issues, including ecology.

The participants of the Chamber Music Residency are encouraged to share with the public their love of music, as well as the moments of communion, dialogue and openness that it embodies.

The residents will perform in three concerts:

  • Concert #1 – 28 June, at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 9 p.m.
  • Concert # 2 – 30 June, at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 9 p.m.
  • The final concert of the Chamber Music Residency — 5 July, at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 9 p.m.

The Académie is supported by ENGIE Foundation
