How can a spirit remain free when the individual is oppressed? Will Zaide overcome her slavery through resignation or revolt? For the first time at Aix-en-Provence, here is the only opera Mozart composed on his own initiative and not as a commission.
Hence its comparative incompleteness, its posthumous production and its rarity. For this very reason, Zaide is a visionary work. Intended by Mozart to found the German Enlightenment, it showed occidental theatre the domineering power of romantic sentiment.
The first performance is in memory of Gabriel Dussurget
Sung in German with French subtitles
