“You know how women are: moods as strange as cats. They meow, and it's love!" Filippo, Act I, scene 6
With its thwarted lovers, old fogeys and clever servants Greek comedy asserts that money does not bring happiness and that only youth and imagination can lay claim to this ultimate commodity.
The magic of theatre lies in its ability to make us feel better or worry us, making it completely real for the duration of the show, but keeping us guessing because once the curtain falls, no one knows what happens to such a delicate happiness. Haydn provides a vivid demonstration of this truth, which inspires any dramatic work by his friend Mozart.
Sung in Italian with French subtitles
